What is a Non-Stress Test?
A Non-Stress Test (NST) is a prenatal test that monitors the baby's heart rate and movement. The test measures the baby's heart rate in response to its own movements. A normal NST shows that the baby's heart rate increases with movement (accelerations), which is a good sign of fetal health.
When is NST Recommended?
NST may be recommended in the following situations:
- High-risk pregnancies
- Post-term pregnancies (beyond 40 weeks)
- Multiple pregnancies
- Gestational diabetes
- Hypertension or preeclampsia
- Decreased fetal movement
- Previous pregnancy complications
How is NST Performed?
The NST procedure is simple and painless:
- You will be asked to lie down comfortably
- Two belts are placed around your abdomen - one monitors fetal heart rate, the other detects contractions
- You may be given a button to press when you feel the baby move
- The test typically lasts 20-30 minutes
- The baby's heart rate and movements are recorded and analyzed
Understanding NST Results
NST results are classified as:
- Reactive (Normal): At least 2 accelerations of 15 bpm lasting 15 seconds in 20 minutes
- Non-reactive: Fewer than 2 accelerations in 20 minutes
- Equivocal: Borderline results requiring further testing
