When is Colposcopy Recommended?
Colposcopy is typically recommended when:
- Your PAP smear shows abnormal results
- You have tested positive for HPV (Human Papillomavirus)
- Your healthcare provider sees abnormal areas during a routine pelvic exam
- You experience unexplained bleeding or discharge
- You have persistent cervical inflammation
What to Expect During Colposcopy
The colposcopy procedure is usually performed in a doctor's office or clinic and takes about 15-30 minutes:
- You'll be asked to undress from the waist down and lie on an exam table
- A speculum is inserted to hold the vaginal walls apart
- The colposcope (magnifying instrument) is positioned outside the vagina
- Your doctor examines the cervix, vagina, and vulva
- A vinegar solution or iodine may be applied to highlight abnormal areas
- If abnormalities are found, a biopsy may be taken
Colposcopy Results and Follow-up
The results will be discussed with you after the procedure:
- Normal: No abnormal areas detected
- Abnormal: Further evaluation or treatment may be needed
- Biopsy results: Usually available within 1-2 weeks
Depending on the findings, your doctor may recommend:
- Regular monitoring with PAP smears
- Cryotherapy or LEEP procedure
- Further diagnostic tests
- Referral to a specialist
